BACD Lee Elementary School Donations Update – March 2018

Last November at Fall Party, we raised over $5,000 for Lee Elementary. This school, which serves BACD and several other nearby neighborhood organizations, has a robust Dual Language (Spanish) and IB program, which also includes a Spanish component. When we asked for a “needs inventory” for the school, the teachers overwhelmingly requested Spanish language materials. So, we agreed to provide library materials in Spanish for all grades.

In addition to the supplies delivered earlier this year for the younger grades, BACD has now delivered the dual language supplies for grades 4 and 5, as well as materials for an upcoming writing exercise. Specifically, BACD donated:

• two complete sets of Spanish-English dictionaries to be used by the Grades 4 and 5 classrooms. Previously, teachers had been borrowing dictionaries from one another to gather enough random dictionaries for the students to use during testing where permitted.

• four novel sets in Spanish. These are the first complete novel sets in Spanish owned by the school and allow the kids to read and discuss the same book together. They have already started reading their first novel.

• additional books and learning materials that are already in use as homework for the kids

• materials to support the school’s first Rail Writers field trip involving creative writing while riding the TRE to Fort Worth and back.

Thanks to everyone who supported this effort at the Fall Party fundraiser, and special thanks to our own Scott Clark for working to get the materials to the school. For more information on BACD projects, feel free to email us at belmontaddition@yahoo.com.

Porch Crawl 2018 – April 28

Please join us for Porch Crawl 2018! Each street in BACD hosts the
neighborhood for an hour. We drink, snack, and mingle. When the hour is
up, we move in mass to the next street. We will start on Belmont again this
year and make our way to Llano.
While this isn’t a fund raiser, we do hope to break even, so we are selling
BACD wine and beer glasses for $10 each. $20 gets you two glasses and a
new BACD bottle-opener flashdrive! (We love swag!) Your glass is your
ticket to the event and yours to keep! If you don’t want a glass, we hope
you’ll consider at $10 (or more) donation. Cash or check please.
BIG THANKS to Sarah Wick for chairing the committee!

NextDoor Good Neighbors Party Sept 29

Nobody loves a party like the BACD!  National Night Out is just around the corner and the annual Fall Party comes in November. But before all that, we have another great party planned. This one is being hosted by Nextdoor.com.

This summer Nextdoor embarked on a Summer of Good Neighbors Tour where they hosted celebrations in some of the first Nextdoor neighborhoods in the country. Well, Nextdoor Belmont Addition was one of the first in Dallas, so I’m excited to announce that Nextdoor will be ending its tour right here in Belmont Addition – in a big way!

Nextdoor will be hosting a block party for our community on Friday, September 29th from 5:00-7:00pm. The celebration will be complete with food trucks, Nextdoor swag, and a visit from special guest Jenna Bush Hager, who will be giving community remarks around 5:45pm. The Nextdoor team will also be here to help us celebrate, along with our local PD officers and firefighters. The party will be held on Concho between Goliad and Palo Pinto. Water and soft drinks will be available, but if you wanted to bring a cooler with something more adult friendly, you are welcome.

Annie Barco from Nextdoor’s Communications Team will be sending out an email in the coming days with an RSVP link and further event information. There will also be a link to a submission form for a Dallas Good Neighbor Award, which Nextdoor is doing in partnership with Real Simple. The good neighbor winner will be announced by Real Simple during the block party, so let’s be sure to represent Belmont Addition in the nominations!

Please keep an eye out for Annie’s email and RSVP to the event if you plan to attend. And feel free to reach out to Darren Dattalo if you have any questions, as I am Nextdoor’s point of contact for the event.

PORCH CRAWL This Weekend!

Saturday April 29, 2017 – RAIN OR SHINE!

BACD is ready for a party!  The event is this Saturday, April 29, beginning at 6pm at the Belmont Host home. From there we will move hourly to each additional home on the list below. Marathoners can join us at Belmont and stay through to Llano, and sprinters can hop in or out at any point along the way. We always have a large turn out for this event and you don’t want to miss this chance to meet your neighbors.

6pm to 7pm       6014 Belmont
7pm to 8pm       5824 Goliad
8pm to 9pm       5946 Palo Pinto
9pm to 10pm     5901 Velasco
10pm to 11pm   5746 Llano

All BACD residents and their friends are welcome at the event. We even welcome our alumni residents who’ve moved out of the CD.  While we don’t charge admission, we do sell wine and beer glasses to offset the cost of the event. Glasses are $10 each. (Unfortunately, we cannot take credit cards at Porch Crawl.) This is not a fundraiser, but we do rely on donations to cover the costs of beer and wine. Food and decorations are provided by donations from our sponsors and residents on the individual streets.

A NOTE ABOUT RAIN…  As many of you know, we had rain at Fall Party and we persisted. We also had rain at Porch Crawl a couple years ago and we persisted. Nothing keeps a good BACD party down. We’re watching the forecast closely and all the stops have prepared a rain-plan just in case. So even if you see rain out, grab an umbrella and come on out!

Double check your calendar and be sure not to miss the event!

Porch Crawl 2017 – Are you ready to crawl?

PorchCrawl2017BannerMark your calendars for Porch Crawl 2017: April 29, 2017! This year, we’ll be celebrating a different holiday on each street. We’re reversing the order of streets this year. We’ll start with Cinqo de Mayo on Belmont and end with New Year’s Eve on Llano. Along the way, we’ll celebrate Texas Independence Day, Mardi Gras and Halloween. Should be fun!

Starting at 6:00pm at the first house, we will continue with a stop at each house every hour.  Last year, we had over 200 people turnout throughout the night.  We hope to see you there!

GET INVOLVED

We need your help! The success of our events are the result of community involvement.  Help the host on your street throw a rockin’ stop, join us at the planning meetings, or sponsor the event through a monetary, food, drink, or supply donation. Each street has a street captain in charge of putting together a one hour party. Volunteers from the street will help the street captain with decorations, food, additional beverages and entertainment. If you don’t cook, maybe you could coordinate a game or activity to entertain the crowd. There’s lots to do and the street captains need your help.

This year we especially need help on Llano. We have a host home, but are still looking for a street captain and several volunteers to make the last stop a great one. Whether you live on Llano or not, if you’re willing to help out on the Llano stop, please let us know by contacting us at belmontaddition@yahoo.com or Darren Dattalo at darren@homesintheloop.com.

SPONSORS

As always we need sponsorships to help defray the cost of the event. Although we do raise some limited funds through the sale of BACD swag, those mostly go toward the cost of the wine and beer provided at the stops. Additional costs for decorations and food at the stops can add up. If you would like to donate toward your street’s party or towards the event as a whole, drop me a note at darren@homesintheloop.com.

Update on Vickery Towers

The old Vickery Towers building at Greenville and Belmont was torn down last year and many BACD residents have asked about the future of the site. The owner of the senior’s home had intended to develop a residential community on the site. The 8 acre piece of land was too expensive for another senior’s facility and traditional residential was the only viable option. After demolishing the old building, Columbia Pacific Advisors released plans for a modern apartment community with a condo tower in the center and a ring a townhomes at the perimeter. As of now, they have sold the property to Trammel Crow Residential (TCR). Columbia specializes in senior care and this would have been a deviation from their business model. So it really makes more sense for everyone, including the neighbors, to have a local company that specializes in residential develop the site.

TCR has chosen to build virtually the same design that Columbia had submitted. However, they opted to re-design the exterior in a Craftsman-style which is more in keeping with our neighborhood than the modern design Colunbia had proposed. The Continue reading

Fall Party Fundraising Event

Fall Party is not only a heck of a good time in the neighborhood, it’s our annual fund raiser.  We raise money for a variety of projects, from beautification projects in our neighborhood to efforts to support our local schools.  So, when you come to Fall Party this year, bring your $$ and help us raise some dough!  To donate, you can drop your donation in one of the donation jars at the event, “vote with your dollars” in contests like the Chili Cook-off, participate in the Silent Auction or Wine Pull.

Silent Auction

Silent Auction 2016 will not disappoint. Local businesses and neighbors donate gift cards or items and a creative team groups them into irresistible baskets. Be prepared to outbid your neighbors on fabulous baskets with themes such as “Muchos Tacos”, “Date Night”, “The Morning After”, “Burger’s Galore”……

We need your help in collecting auction items to donate. If you have a service or product you want to donate or know a local business that will support the auction contact Melissa Kingston for more information at mkingston@fflawoffice.com. Your generosity in soliciting items as well as bidding on them is much appreciated.

Biggest Porch Crawl Yet!

The annual BACD Porch Crawl was held on April 23rd. Last year, severe rains and a tornado warning midway through the party cut the event short. This year, we had perfect 75-degree weather and sunny skies. The result was the largest turn out to a neighborhood event yet. Based on sign-ins and donations, we estimate about 220 neighbors showed up for the event. This year we added BACD branded beer glasses to the event and sold out or them quickly. By design, we try to make this a break even event with donations at the door covering the cost of the event. And we managed to do that again this year. Thanks to all the Belmontonians that came out and donated! Thanks also to the 5 hosts and their volunteers that put on a great party at each of the 5 stops. And especially thanks to our sponsors who donated materials and cash in lieu for the event. Check out the list below and be sure to stop by their place of business and tell them thank you.

Next year, we’ll be trying things a little differently. One suggestion was that we start on Belmont and end on Llano just to change things up. Done! And next year, we’ll drop the theme and just let the streets do whatever they want. Here’s some pics from the event:
